Researchers
The density of people whose job is to create new knowledge. The workforce behind every breakthrough.
EU vs US vs China vs D9+ over time
Per million people
The story
On researcher density, Europe and America are nearly even: roughly 4,700 and 4,900 researchers per million people. China runs at less than half that per capita, but on absolute headcount it fields the largest research workforce in history. Europe's constraint is not how many researchers it trains; it is how many it keeps, and what it lets them build.
Why it matters
Research density decides how fast new knowledge appears locally, and local matters: ideas travel, but the companies built on them tend to stay where the people are.
Policy context
European research careers lose to US labs on pay, funding autonomy and speed, which turns a training advantage into an export product. Retention, not enrolment, is the policy lever this indicator points at.
